The English Faculty at Broadoak School is committed to helping pupils to achieve. With 72% of pupils awarded a 4+ English Language and Literature in 2018, we pride ourselves on being one of the highest performing subject areas in the school.
In addition to our commitment to excellent results, we foster an environment of enjoyment. Pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure, enjoy a creative experience and to use their imagination at every opportunity.
At Key Stage 3 we help our learners to discover what being a reader means through a rich variety of texts with GCSE content in mind. From getting to know 19th Century fictional characters to learning how persuasive texts in the media can influence us and our subconscious – we encourage pupils to be critical and analytical. We also focus on developing an array of writing skills helping pupils to manipulate different text types, to write in a range of styles and genres and to produce imaginative texts.
Exam strategy is very much at the heart of Key Stage 4 but we are still able to select engaging, varied and thought-provoking texts to enable learners of all abilities to achieve to their full potential. As well as learning historical contexts and gaining a wealth of knowledge about the wider world, by the end of Year 11 our students can react perceptively and sensitively to the writing of others, as well as knowing how to accurately create mature pieces of their own.
